Combat oriented Artificial intelligence is probably the most applied form of Artificial intelligence. Game designers use AI to make their game interesting and playable. The era of combat oriented AI began in early 90’s. The development was slow until valve released half-life where the AI took a major turn. A game called marines had a way better AI than any previous game till that time. With better bullet impacts and reactions, the AI had awareness of the real player.
After half-life the game designers started concentrating on AI and not just graphics. In the present scenario the AI can be seen crouching and hiding behind boxes, throwing back the grenade and much more. Still, I feel that AI has lot to improve and has a long way to go. Though an AI would shoot like “PURI” (aka LOLCAT) and dodge incoming bullets but they need plenty of improvement before they even get close to replace humans.
Some things I feel that humans offer over AI:
The Map:
Humans can exploit the map in many ways in which AI cannot.
For Eg. In CS humans would jump over each other and reach places where AI cannot. Humans would find places to hide and crouch while AI are still not trained to exploit maps in such a way.
Teamwork/Strategy:
The most important part of winning is teamwork or strategy.
Eg. Lets talk of CS again. We have seen a hundred thousands of clan matches and we know team work is the important key of winning. I have seen a lot of times when the bot rushes to the wrong location of bomb plant.
And to teach AI team work would be a tedious task as it’s complicated with humans even.
Last Man Standing:
In this case the AI would play its normal game what it has been taught without considering the fact that he is the last man standing. Reloading while running (unlike humans who would find a hiding place to reload), going right against 3 or 4 opponents together are some of the things that need to be improved in future AI.
After knowing so much, I feel “Human Stupidity is better than the best AI till now”.
